United Nigeria Airlines has expanded its fleet with the acquisition of two Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircrafts—a development that underscores the carrier’s growing footprint in Nigeria’s aviation industry and its commitment to enhancing domestic and regional air connectivity.
The newly acquired aircraft were officially unveiled on Thursday June 18, 2026— with the airline dedicating them to two distinguished personalities whose contributions have shaped Nigeria’s cultural and traditional heritage — the late literary giant, Professor Chinua Achebe, and His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Chairman of New Nigeria Airline — Prof. Obiora Okonkwo —described the gesture as a celebration of excellence, leadership and national pride.
Professor Chinua Achebe, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest literary giants , gained global recognition through his groundbreaking novel Things Fall Apart, which remains one of the most widely read African literary works in history. Achebe’s writings helped redefine global perceptions of Africa and inspired generations of writers and scholars across the continent and beyond.

The decision to name one of the aircrafts after the renowned author was described as a tribute to his enduring legacy, intellectual contributions and commitment to telling the African story from an authentic perspective.
The second aircraft was named in honour of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers. Revered for his leadership, wisdom and contributions to community development, the monarch’s presence at the ceremony added significance to the occasion and highlighted the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in national development.
Industry stakeholders at the event noted that the naming of the aircraft after the two icons symbolises a unique blend of heritage and progress, reflecting the airline’s vision of connecting people while preserving the values and history that define Nigeria.

United Nigeria Airlines also disclosed that the two Boeing 737-800NG aircrafts represent the first batch of a six-aircraft acquisition programme aimed at strengthening its operational capacity. Four additional aircrafts are expected to join the fleet in the coming months as the airline continues its expansion drive.
The Boeing 737-800NG is globally recognised for its efficiency, reliability and passenger comfort, making it one of the most widely used aircrafts models in commercial aviation.
The latest fleet expansion comes at a time when Nigeria’s aviation sector is witnessing renewed investment by indigenous carriers seeking to meet increasing passenger demand and improve service delivery.

With the addition of the new aircraft, United Nigeria Airlines is expected to increase route capacity, enhance operational efficiency and further position itself as a key player in the country’s aviation landscape.
