“WE DON’T HAVE WHERE TO SLEEP” – Ogidi Community Cry Out As Senator Umeh Visits Flood Scenes
The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Dr. Victor Umeh, OFR, in continuation of his tour of Idemili flood and erosion disaster sites to assess the level of damaged caused by the recent flooding in the area, visited Ogidi Community in Idemili North Local Government Area where a Federal Road has been rendered impassable and many residents displaced by the recent dreadful flooding.
Senator Umeh who was received by the leadership of the Community led by the President General of Ogidi, Mr. Chijioke Ewesiobi, and the President General of Ogidi Youth, Hon. Chris Obi Okafor, visited the flooded Federal Road where he was informed about the terrible death of a pregnant woman who drowned while plying the road in tricycle, as well as a herdsman who lost his life while trying to rescue a cow that fell into a ditch.
The Senator was further led through some of the streets where houses and compounds were visibly overran by flood. Some of the residents expressed great fear with the rising flooding of the area especially as the rainy season is yet to get to the peak.
Recounting the level of damaged and all they had lost to the flood, they pleaded for the intervention of government and well-spirited individuals, and for an IDP Camp for temporary resettlement.
Senator Victor Umeh who completed his assessment tour at the Palace of the Traditional Ruler of Ogidi kingdom, HRM Igwe Pharm. Alex Uzor Onyido, Ezechuamagha 1, which was also flooded by the recent rain, expressed dismay over the wreckage caused by what he described as ‘natural disaster’ and sympathized with the Igwe Ezechuamagha 1, and the entire people Ogidi Community over the horrible experience.
He noted that considering the gravity of the continued and worsening perennial flooding and consequential erosion in Ogidi and parts of Idemili North and South Local Government Areas, the Federal Government and it’s Agencies should quickly intervene with permanent solutions to save lives and property of the people especially as the State Government may lack the capacity to effectively manage the situation.
Giving hope to the troubled community, Senator Victor Umeh assured them of a proactive legislative action in the Senate upon resumption from recess and every measures to get the attention and urgent intervention of the Federal Government and it’s Agencies—the National Emergency Management Agency ( NEMA) and Ecological Projects Office to the precarious condition of the people of Idemili particular those affected by erosion disaster in Obosi perennial flooding in Ogidi thereby maintaining the call for the Federal Government to declare the Idemili Basin “An Environmental Disaster Zone.”
On their part, the Traditional Ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Pharm. Alex Uzor Onyido, Ezechuamagha 1 ( speaking over the phone ) and the President General of Ogidi, Mr. Chijioke Ewesiobi, and the President General of Ogidi Youth, Hon. Chris Obi Okafor, thanked Senator Victor Umeh for his quick intervention and continued show of love for the Ogidi Community while expressing optimism that his presence would significantly take their plight to the spotlight and also attract the necessary interventions for a permanent solution and as well, give succour to those who have lost loved ones or means of livelihood to the disaster.
They extolled his consistency of character, proactive, visionary, responsive and people-oriented representation of Anambra Central as well as his numerous projects and programmes aimed at impacting the lives of ndị Anambra Central positively such as the Anambra Central Students’ Scholarship Scheme sponsoring 332 Students from the 58 Communities in Anambra Central Senatorial District inclusive of Ogidi.
