Thirty-five years after its creation, Anambra State has grown into a story that extends far beyond its geographical boundaries.

It is a story written by people who turned enterprise into a way of life, resilience into survival and determination into prosperity. Across generations, Ndi Anambra have carried the ambition to build, the courage to take risks and the conviction that no matter how difficult the beginning may be, the future can always be better.

It is this spirit that High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, businessman, philanthropist and community development advocate, celebrates as Anambra marks 35 years since its creation on August 27, 1991.

For High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, however, the anniversary is not simply another date on the calendar.

It is a return to memory, identity and responsibility.

A proud son of Aku Village in Ezinifite, Aguata Local Government Area, High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele maintains a deeply rooted connection with the community that gave him his beginnings. The values of hard work, self-reliance, community and service that shaped his early life have remained central to his philosophy even as his business and philanthropic activities have taken him beyond his immediate community.

That is why, for High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, celebrating Anambra means celebrating both where he came from and what the state has become.

From the commercial energy of Onitsha to the historic significance of Awka, from the agricultural communities of Aguata to the countless towns and villages scattered across the state, Anambra has established a distinctive place in Nigeria’s economic and social story.

Ndi Anambra have built businesses in virtually every major Nigerian city. They have established industries, invested in education, created employment and taken their entrepreneurial spirit across Africa and the wider world.

It is about the ability to create something from very little, to rebuild after setbacks and to return home with a sense of responsibility.

That principle is particularly evident in the approach of High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele to community development.

For High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, success loses part of its meaning when it does not create opportunities for others. The belief that individuals who rise from their communities have a responsibility to contribute to their development has influenced several interventions in Ezinifite and elsewhere in Anambra.

One of the clearest examples came on May 23, 2025, when High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele flagged off a 4.2-kilometre road project in Ezinifite, Aguata Local Government Area. The project, personally sponsored by High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, was undertaken in line with the Public-Private Community Partnership (PPCP) initiative of the Anambra State Government.

On the surface, it is a road project.

But for the community, its significance goes beyond the physical infrastructure.

Roads connect people to markets. They open access to schools and healthcare. They make movement easier, reduce isolation and create opportunities for economic activity.

For High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, therefore, the project represents a practical expression of the belief that prosperity should not end with the individual who achieves it.

It should find its way back home.

That philosophy is captured in the Igbo idea of “Aku Luo Uno” the belief that wealth and success should contribute to the welfare and development of one’s home.

It is a philosophy that speaks directly to the broader Anambra experience.

The state has produced generations of entrepreneurs, professionals, industrialists, academics, farmers, traders and innovators who have refused to allow limitations to define their possibilities.

Yet, as Anambra celebrates 35 years, High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele believes the next stage of development requires more than individual success.

It requires collective responsibility.

Government has a major role, but government cannot build the future alone.

The entrepreneur who creates employment is part of the development process. So is the farmer who feeds a community, the teacher who shapes a child’s future, the professional who carries the name of Anambra with dignity, and the young person who refuses to surrender a dream because the path is difficult.

Traditional rulers, religious institutions, community organisations, investors, industrialists, women, youths and civil society all have a stake in what Anambra becomes in the decades ahead.

For High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, development should ultimately be measured by its impact on ordinary people.

A road that improves access is development.

A scholarship that keeps a child in school is development.

Capital that helps a young entrepreneur establish a business is development.

Healthcare support that restores hope to a family is development.

Giving a woman the means to become economically independent is development.

Providing a young person with a marketable skill is development.

These are the seemingly ordinary interventions that, when multiplied across communities, become the foundation of a stronger society.

This year’s anniversary theme, “Our Environment, Our Future,” also presents another important dimension of the Anambra story.

The prosperity of tomorrow cannot be built by destroying the environment today.

As the state expands its cities, develops roads, grows markets and attracts investment, environmental responsibility must remain part of the development equation.

Erosion, waste management and environmental degradation are challenges that demand sustained attention. The infrastructure being built today must serve not only the present generation but also those who will inherit Anambra decades from now.

High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele also recognises the contributions of successive administrations, traditional institutions, business leaders, professionals, civil servants, community organisations and ordinary citizens whose efforts have contributed to the state’s progress.

High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele acknowledges the current administration of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, particularly for its emphasis on infrastructure, economic transformation, urban renewal, environmental sustainability and human capital development.

Major infrastructure projects such as the Amawbia-Ekwulobia-Uga Dual Carriageway and the Ekwulobia Flyover have further strengthened the conversation around connectivity and physical development in the state.

But anniversaries, according to High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele, should not become occasions for celebration alone.

They should also force a people to look ahead.

At 35, the question before Anambra is no longer only how much has been achieved since 1991. It is what the present generation is prepared to build for those coming after it.

What kind of Anambra will today’s children inherit?

Will they inherit a state where enterprise remains strong, but where opportunities are more evenly accessible?

Will they inherit communities with better roads, stronger schools, improved healthcare and a protected environment?

Will they inherit a state capable of retaining its brightest young minds while remaining connected to the millions of Ndi Anambra succeeding around the world?

These are the questions that will ultimately define the next chapter.

High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele believes Anambra has the human capacity, intellectual strength and entrepreneurial energy to answer them.

The vision is of a state where children can dream without limits, businesses can thrive, communities are connected, innovation is encouraged, young people can find meaningful opportunities and development is measured not merely by projects completed, but by lives transformed.

The journey, clearly, is not over.

If anything, 35 years represents another starting point.

From Aku Village in Ezinifite, Aguata, to Onitsha, Awka and every other corner of the state, and from Anambra to the many places around the world where Ndi Anambra have established themselves, the spirit remains unmistakable build, persevere, succeed and remember home.

That is the story High Chief Sir (Dr.) Amb. Anthony Ikenna Obele celebrates at 35.

It is also the challenge the anniversary places before the next generation.

Anambra at 35 is not the end of a story. It is another beginning and the most important chapters may still be ahead.
