Isiala Mbano LGA— Imo State
High Chief Mike Duru Ejiogu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Imo North Senatorial District, has declared his determination to work towards the transformation of Okigwe Zone, insisting that the area deserves greater development opportunities and purposeful representation.
Ejiogu made the declaration on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at his residence in Anara, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, during a meeting with members of the Okigwe PDP Campaign Council, party leaders and other stakeholders preparing for the 2027 general elections.
The traditional prime minister of Anara Ancient Kingdom said his decision to contest the senatorial seat followed years of concern about the development challenges facing the zone. He maintained that his ambition was not simply to occupy public office but to contribute to decisions that could improve the lives of the people.

“When you check, you can see clearly that Okigwe Zone is behind in all indices of development. This is a source of serious worry for me. Ordinarily, I will not be here today running for Senate, but I want to be present where the future of Okigwe Zone is discussed and where we can access more opportunities to develop our area. This is not the time to make promises; it is time to work to salvage our Zone,” Ejiogu said.
He identified human capital development, youth mentorship, women’s empowerment, community development and philanthropy among the areas through which he had sought to contribute to society before venturing into the senatorial race.
Ejiogu also expressed appreciation to the Director-General of the Okigwe PDP Campaign Council, Hon. Ben Duru, the council chairman and other party leaders for their efforts in establishing campaign structures across the six local government areas in the zone.
He urged members of the campaign council to remain committed to their responsibilities, stressing the need for hard work, sincerity and cooperation in pursuing the party’s objectives.
The meeting followed a tour of the six local government areas and the inauguration of campaign structures at zonal, local government and ward levels. The activities form part of the PDP’s preparations for a special campaign flag-off ah
ead of the 2027 elections.
Also addressing the gathering, Hon. Ikenna Emeruem, the PDP candidate for the Ehime Mbano/Obowo/Ihitte-Uboma Federal Constituency, expressed confidence in the party’s chances at the polls.
Emeruem described the party’s candidates as credible and competent, urging members to remain loyal to the PDP and intensify their efforts ahead of the elections.
Other party leaders present included Hon. Mike Ahumibe, Southeast Secretary of the PDP, and Hon. Esther Aguwamba, Southeast Zonal Ex-Officio.
The meeting also attracted the party’s candidates for the Isiala Mbano, Obowo, Ihitte-Uboma, Ehime Mbano, Onuimo and Okigwe state constituencies, alongside the six local government party chairmen and campaign council members from the zonal, local government and ward levels.
For Nigeria Media Expert, Public Analyst and Publisher of 4th Estate Reporters, Njoku Macdonald Obinna, the development challenges facing Okigwe Zone deserve sustained attention from political leaders, particularly as the electorate prepares to make decisions that will shape the area’s future.
Ejiogu’s declaration places the question of development firmly within his senatorial campaign. As the 2027 elections approach, his ability to present clear priorities and demonstrate how he intends to pursue them will be important in winning the confidence of voters across the district.

With campaign activities gathering momentum, the contest for Imo North is expected to draw greater attention to the competing candidates, their programmes and their plans for addressing the concerns of the people of Okigwe Zone.
