GOVERNOR ALEX OTTI CELEBRATES IGWE ACHEBE AT 85, DESCRIBES HIM AS A SYMBOL OF CULTURAL EXCELLENCE AND RESPECT FOR TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP

The atmosphere at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, came alive with dignity, culture, and heartfelt tributes as the Executive Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, joined eminent Nigerians, traditional rulers, clergy, and distinguished guests to celebrate the 85th birthday of Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the revered Obi of Onitsha, Agbogidi.

The colourful event was not merely a birthday celebration, but a profound gathering in honour of a monarch whose life has become a shining reference point for integrity, wisdom, leadership, and selfless service to humanity.

Governor Otti, while paying glowing tribute to the elder statesman and foremost traditional ruler, described Agbogidi as “a man of excellence, grace, uncommon wisdom, and enduring values,” whose remarkable life journey continues to inspire generations across Nigeria and beyond.

Speaking passionately before an audience filled with traditional rulers, political leaders, captains of industry, and men of God, Governor Otti reflected on the exceptional academic and professional accomplishments of the Obi of Onitsha. He noted that the monarch’s educational pedigree, having attended prestigious institutions such as Stanford University and Columbia University, remains a testament to discipline, brilliance, and the pursuit of excellence.

The Governor further praised the monarch’s distinguished career in the private sector, where he built a formidable legacy as a business leader and respected captain of industry before ascending the throne of his forefathers.

In an emotional reflection, Governor Otti recounted his personal relationship with the revered monarch, revealing that their bond dates back several years from an encounter in Ikoyi. According to him, Agbogidi became more than a royal father figure, serving as a mentor whose support and endorsement played a defining role in his political journey.

“There was no better place to celebrate him than Umuahia,” the Governor declared, emphasizing the deep cultural and historical ties that bind the people of Abia and Onitsha together. He noted that the gathering symbolized the unity, inclusiveness, and shared destiny of the Igbo nation and Nigeria at large.

As tributes continued to pour in from different quarters, Governor Otti offered prayers for the continued strength, wisdom, sound health, and longevity of the Obi of Onitsha, describing him as a global symbol of dignity and honour whose influence transcends Onitsha, the Southeast, Nigeria, and Africa.

The evening ended in celebration and admiration for a royal icon whose 85 years have remained deeply impactful, inspirational, and worthy of national honour.
