RIVERS ASSEMBLY SUMMONS HEIRS ENERGIES LTD MANAGEMENT, URGES RENAISSANCE AFRICA ENERGY LTD TO PAY COMPENSATION TO B-DERE COMMUNITY
Resolving on Reports of its Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions after a robust debate, the Rivers State House of Assembly on Monday, at its 4th Legislative Sitting of the Fourth Session, summoned the Managing Director of Heirs Energies and his management team to appear before the House on Monday, 20th July, 2026, failure of which the House will be forced to issue a warrant to compel their attendance in accordance with Section 129 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

The House made the resolution when the Public Complaints and Petitions Committee reported, that the company despite receiving repeated invitations from the Committee, neglected and refused to appear before the Committee, which the House considered egregious, and an affront.
Commenting on the Non- appearance of Heirs Energies management, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule said the House would not condone such impudence, adding that Section 129 empowers the House to procure evidence, written or oral, direct or circumstantial you that may be material or relevant to the subject matter from any person invited for that purpose, and therefore urged Heirs Energies Ltd to without fail appear before the House on Monday, 20th July, 2026 at 10:00am.
Recall that at its 3rd Legislative Sitting last week, the House frowned at the non-appearance of Heirs Energies Limited before the Committee with respect to a petition by Omuohia Community, Igwuruta Town.
In the same vein, the House has adopted the recommendations of the House Committee on Public Complaints and Petitions, which affirmed the assessed payment of compensation to persons and community as fair and reasonable, given the degree of environmental damage arising from the oil spill occasioned by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited’s equipment failure.
The Committee reported that , the Company paid 120 million Naira as compensation and graciously carried out a medical outreach worth more than 100 million Naira in line with the independent consultant recommendation.

The House further urged the company to ensure a comprehensive clean- up, and remediation of the affected area in the interest of public health . It was further reported that the company is currently remediating impacted areas affected by the oil spill.

Again, recall that the Report on the Oil Spillage on the 24″ Ogala-Bonny Pipeline caused by the activities of Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited was presented to the House at its Sitting last week.
