AFIAOLU NNEWI 2026: EBUKA ONUNKWO REVEALS NNEWI TIES, POLITICAL JOURNEY

At the 2026 edition of Afiaolu Nnewi, held on Tuesday, August 25, leading Anambra South senatorial contender, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, revealed the circumstances that propelled him into politics, while also recounting his deep ties with Nnewi and the values that have shaped his philanthropic journey.

Onunkwo disclosed that it was the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah that ultimately pushed him into active politics, describing his decision as an act of divine providence.

“If Ifeanyi Ubah had not died and if his wife had indicated interest in the position, I would not have ventured into politics,” he said.

The philanthropist, whose humanitarian activities have spanned more than a decade, explained that his commitment to helping the less privileged was rooted in a covenant he made with God during the most difficult period of his life.

“While lying on a mat in my shop, I vowed to God that if He changed my fate and made me wealthy, I would ensure that the wealth was used to wipe tears from the eyes of the poor and downtrodden. I have continued to keep this promise since God blessed me,” he said.

According to him, his decision to seek the Senate seat is not motivated by the desire to accumulate wealth, but by the opportunity to expand his capacity for humanitarian service.

“I am therefore not going to the Senate to amass money, as I have been blessed without measure. I am only going to expand my capacity to touch lives,” Chief Onunkwo declared.

He also acknowledged the profound influence of Nnewi on his entrepreneurial journey, noting that the city taught him the philosophy of Aku Luo Uno; that wealth should be created and invested for the development of one’s home.

He explained that this philosophy informed his decision to establish his award-winning engine oil manufacturing factory at Ozubulu, a neighbouring community to his hometown.

Chief Ebuka Onunkwo expressed appreciation to the people of Nnewi for their unwavering support and goodwill since he declared his political ambition.

He also acknowledged the members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), explaining that although circumstances had compelled him to pursue his senatorial ambition under another political platform, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), his relationship with the people transcended party lines.

He promised that if the APGA leadership in Anambra South failed to demonstrate tangible commitment to the welfare of its members before December 2026, he would not hesitate to intervene where necessary.

Chief Onunkwo equally admonished members of the NDC to regard members of other political parties in Anambra South as allies rather than adversaries. He stressed that his support and humanitarian intervention cut across party affiliations, adding that the people of Anambra South should remain united in their resolve to make him their senator despite their different political choices.

Earlier in the day, Chief Onunkwo had visited the women of Osumenyi at their August meeting venue, where he met a widow whose house he had previously built as part of his philanthropic interventions.

The widow’s relatives and members of the community showered encomiums and prayers on him in appreciation of the gesture, describing his intervention as a life-changing act that had restored dignity and hope to the family.

The 2026 Afiaolu Nnewi celebration was attended by numerous dignitaries and featured a colourful display of Nnewi’s rich culture and traditions. The people joined their monarch, HRH Igwe Kenneth Orizu, in giving thanks for the year’s harvest, particularly the gift of yam and other provisions of life, before celebrating the New Yam Festival amid pomp and pageantry.

For Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, the occasion offered more than a celebration of culture. It became an opportunity to reaffirm his longstanding relationship with Nnewi, reveal the personal convictions behind his political journey, and reiterate his commitment to serving the people of Anambra South beyond partisan boundaries.
