Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh Defects To Labour Party, Commends Gov. Alex Otti’s Achievements
Hon. Ikwechegh Joins Labour Party, Commends Gov. Otti’s Achievements
The Member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, has officially defected to the Labour Party, resigning from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Hon. Ikwechegh disclosed this after a closed-door meeting with Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, at Government House, Umuahia, stating that he formally informed the Governor of his decision and received his blessings as the party’s national leader in the State.
He dismissed speculations that he had joined the APC following a recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, clarifying that he only attended an Iftar event hosted by the President and had no intention of defecting to the APC.
According to Ikwechegh, his decision to join the Labour Party was driven by his admiration for Governor Otti’s performance and the visible transformation taking place across Abia State.

“Politics is about interest… It all depends on the perspective with which you look at things,” he stated, emphasizing that his ideology aligns with the Governor’s result-oriented approach.
He also commended the leadership of the Labour Party and urged residents to register, revealing that an online registration link would soon be made available.
Leader of the LP caucus in the National Assembly, Ginger Onwusibe, described the defection as a major gain for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, likening it to a football club signing a talented player to strengthen its squad.
The development is seen as a significant boost for the Labour Party in Abia State’s evolving political landscape.
